Both were part of the Demon Deacons' 2010 recruiting class and redshirted together their first season on campus before playing together the next four seasons.


With Johnson being Wake Forest's best cornerback and James being among the team's best receivers, the two often went head-to-head in practice. In fact, before the 2014 season, Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said NFL scouts were at his practice asking him to pit Johnson against James.


“They said ‘Coach, the matchup we want to see is (Johnson) versus (James),” Clawson told the Winston Salem Journal in 2014. “I said ‘That’s the matchup you’re going to get whether you want it or not.’“I think there’s no question if you ask K.J. or Matt what has helped them the most, it’s going against each other every day. That’s a big body that Kevin’s got to go on every day, and Matt James knows if he can get open against K.J., he’s had to earn it."
