what do i need to ditch protected batteries?

As the title says I'm building a mod it will have a buck boost converter so that will be instead of the regulator will this still require protected cells they will be parallel and not in series

As long as the charger can be set for lithium ion (4.2volt charge termination) and the converter has undervoltage shutdown then you don't need protected batteries. The other thing to be careful of when paralleling batteries is to make sure they have the same state of charge (ie, same voltage)
