Smoked VG - A succesful science experiment

Discussion in 'Vape DIY Juice / Recipes / Mixing' started by D1Chung ├?┬?├?┬▓├?┼╜├?┬▒├?&#, Dec 23, 2015.

  1. Hi All.

I've been reading about the difficulty of getting real cigarette flavours into juices and it gave me an idea.

I've seen a few a few cooknig shows where chefs interested in molecular gastronomy have smoked liquids, like water or milk, in order to imbue them with flavours. The process is exactly the same as smoking fish or meat on a small scale. I though to myself that you might be able to do something similar with Vg or PG in order to produce a vapable flavour.

So here's what I've just done (I don't have a camera so no pics sorry):

    1. Take a large frying pan with a tight fitting lid and line it with foil.
    2. Empty a green tea teabag onto the foil and spread evenly.
    3. Place a metal colander over the tea and in the colander place a shallow bowl containing about a tablespoon of VG. (Try and increase the surface area if you're doing it on a larger scale)
    4. Put on the lid and set it over a low temperature burner for about an hour.

The liquid came out an ever so slightly pale straw colour. I was a bit eager to try it out and ended up melting a plastic pipette in the hot liquid, so please remember to let it cool before trying.

And the end result is a success. It's pure VG with a very mild smoke and green tea flavour with the green tea notes coming through clear up front and a slightly smoky aftertaste. It's actually quite tasty and refreshing.

I'm still on the very basic juices as I've only just begun vaping. So I might hold off any further experimentation for a while. But for any of you other experimental mixers who've been trying to get smoke flavours then please give it a shot.

I would recommend a longer time in the smoker though if you want to get a stronger flavour, maybe 2 to 4 hours. Otherwise just try following anything that works when smoking foodstuffs, hickory, teas, etc. I wanted to try lapsang souchong but I didn't have any. Russian caravan or Chineses gunpowder should give something interesting. I'd be very interested to see what happens if you smoke the VG using tobacco.

Enjoy playing around guys and let me know if you come up with anything interesting from this technique.

Wonder how it would taste using fresh pipe or rolling tobacco instead of green tea?

Aren't we going back to smoking here? I'm not sure how it works, but if your 'smoked' vg contains smoke particles from the smoking process which you then inhale with the vapour, then you've just introduced a carcinogen, surely? Honestly, I don't know but it's the first thought that occurred to me.

It makes me wonder now how FlavourArt produces its Black Fire juice - the vapour tastes and smells exactly like a smoke of some sort.
