Help on making a PT

Discussion in 'Vape Mod Talk' started by thesingh_mist, Apr 6, 2015.

  1. Hi guys,
I need a little help/guidance on making a PT for a 501 atty. I know how to do it as far as wiring it, I just need some help on the power source. Rather than powering the PT off a usb port or hub I want to plug it into the wall.

Here is the question. I also asked it over at ECF but who knows if I'll get an answer there...

If I get a 4.5V/1600mA AC-to-DC Power Adapter for a couple bucks and hard wire it into a project box like the madvapes 501 kit, will it work?

According to an online ohm's law calculator 4.5V 1600mA should get me 2.8 ohms resistance. I've heard that a normal 510 atty should be around 2.2 -2.4 ohms, so I'm guessing that it should work and that it wont burn up attys instantly or at a significantly faster rate than a battery would.

Am I correct in assuming this? If someone that is good with this stuff could let me know, I'd be very grateful!

    Chuck

Hm... Just an idea... This is for 5v ... Still using the USB tho :)
Take a used usb cord, strip the female ends use that for power in. For a wall plug use a 2000mah+ wall to usb adapter, like the one from madvapes.
And PLEASE do not use your PCs USB, Its underpowered only 500mah and in case of things going south you wont mess up your PC :)

"For 5v adapters also check around your house, some of the router adapters are 5v @2.5+amps"

As far as, lower than 5v, whatever adapter will work just make sure it preff over 2000mah. Others will work, and you prob wont notice the difference (IMHO) but that way you ll get all the juice you need plus cooler running adapter. What voltage you ll actually get will depend on atty/carto (this days ohms on those are all over the board, 2.3 is used to be the bench mark joye atty ohms) wiring, connectors.... So if it says 4.5v it doesnt mean.. it ll be 4.5 under load. Prob closer to whats an actual ecig batt (18650 for example) should be Low 4V...

Sure Im forgeting a bunch... n It is late :) But I am sure someone else will pitch in later on!

    Chuck,
I think that will work bro. I made one with only 5volts at 500mA and it works fine though the voltage does drop to 4.5 when in use. A 2amp would be a little better but your 1600mA should be just fine. As Mitrich said, try checking old adapters like routers, cordless phones, cell phone chargers etc, as long as it has an ac to dc converter and is under 6volts you should be okay. Just make sure you use a voltmeter to verify the positive because many of those adapters are not really color coded except for a stripe on one of the wires.

I used to use my R/C car charger with a dial type adjustable voltage knob, cranked it up to almost 9volts before it blew my atty ;). You can find these for about $25 at most radio control hobby stores or online (don't get it from ripoff radioshack), it comes with removable fuses in case you crank it up too high or short the wiring. Mine has a built in ammeter and voltmeter and can use either household ac or dc from a cigarette lighter. The adjustable settings are great because you can use regular or low resistance atties and cartomizers.

Ps, better start stocking up on atomizers if you're going to start playing with home made higher voltage stuff. If you're a curious limit pusher like I am, make sure you carry spare parts.;)

I did some looking around downtown today and decided I'll dig through my pile of orphaned power supplies and find something that fits the 5V 2A range. Everything I saw at Walmart was too expensive to rip apart to make a PT. You cant even get a decent 2A USB charger locally, the cheapest I found was a 4port 2A for 20ish bucks. If I'm gonna pay 20 bucks for the PS I might as well buy a commercial PT.

Out of curiosity, on these USB chargers the spec says 2A (4@500mA) That would lead me to think that there is some sort of protection circuit inside of them to prevent me from drawing the full 2A out of a single port, another reason I took a pass on it.

  10. Next time i order from MadVapes, I'll probably buy a couple of those. Right now I've got stuff in the mail from AltSmoke, MadVapes, and Keith lol! I eagerly await the postman daily... And I'm a bit annoyed that my spare 14500s didnt get here today since I don't have a PT yet.

My inner MacGyver inside wants me to use stuff from around the house!

    Chuck,
I checked the mailbox today and your envelope didn't get returned like O3LG's did. I think I put 5 "forever" stamps on yours(25grams) and 3(10grams) on his so this time the damn usps temp workers better not say it had insufficient postage or I am going to go "postal" on them;).

    Ps, My nickname is Macgyver:).

I'll let you know if it shows up today. I'm a but miffed at the USPS right now, I just checked the status of my ALtSMokes order that was shipped on the 17th and it is still about 2 days out. Whats the point of paying for priorirty (other than tracking) if it takes as long as first class...

This isn't exactly on the original topic, but I found out that the ROKU power supply is 5V @ 2.5 amps and is the exact connection for the silver bullet and BB passthrough. I currently am using the ROKU power supply with the SB passthrough, double barrel top, and 2 standard ohm 510s. This thing is a fog machine that hits llike a freight train without the annoying 90 degree bend in the connector like the radio shack power supply. Thank God I have a PS3 or my girlfriend would kill me for taking the ROKU power supply.
