SMOKING e-cigarettes should be should be banned from restaurants, cafés and nightclubs to avoid “renormalising” the habit, France’s health authority has advised.

The Haut Conseil de la santé publique said that vaping should be banned from these places, which fall outside of current e-cig smoking bans.

The law only bans vaping on public transport, areas where children are present (including vehicles) and in enclosed workplaces - although this applies to most public buildings.

Cafés and restaurants currently escape the ban as they are considered ‘open’ places of work.

The agency said vaping should be banned “even if the risks of passive smoking are zero or extremely limited”.

While e-cigarettes could be seen as aids to stopping or reducing the habit, they could also be a gateway to smoking and pose a risk of “renormalising smoking”.

It also advised of the risks of adolescents becoming addicted to nicotine from using e-cigarettes.

The Fédération interprofessionnelle de la vape which supports e-cigarettes, said that such a ban would give the impression that e-cigarettes were as dangerous as normal ones.
