What do you think about this, I read about a year or so ago that cigarettes sales to persons born after the year to 2000 have been strictly forbidden in the UK. People born after 2000 were at most 14 at that time so the chances were they never even tried a cigarette, this way, smokers will perish in 50 years in UK. Do you think this policy should be applied everywhere around the world, so in 100 years we'll have a better world, smokefree?

I personally think that it is a good initiative to avoid young people smoking, the thing is that I dont really believe the fact of that young people will pay any attention to that, even when it's an official rule, young people will still do it no matter what, if they like it I sincerely dont see any reason to stop doing it, in my opinion I think that it is an useless rule, it would be good if every country had that rule but we never know if it is going to be acordingly followed.

I'm all for any type of cigarette ban. The ban on youths is a really smart and aggressive way of going about it. Plenty of research shows that people are far less likely to smoke cigarettes if they don't try it during their adolescent years.

That's a different way to go about it!
So instead of saying "hey you have to be 18 to buy these" they are saying "you have to be born before 2000" which would slowly increase the age required to buy them?
I like it! Makes a lot of sense.

I think it's very restrictive of personal freedoms. However, smoking sometimes involves infringes on other peoples freedoms by exposing people to smoke that don't want to be breathing it in. In a big picture sense this is a good thing, but I don't think it should be banned for just any one group. If anything ban it across the board.

Actually it makes all the difference in the world, a person which is currently born after 2000 in UK, isn't able to buy a pack of cigarettes, even if they manager to procure them somehow, there will be a certain point when there shall be no one in UK old enough to procure cigarettes. Also the smoking rate among the youngsters will lower since it will be a whole lot harder to procure cigarettes. Even a 10% decrease by years, even 1% decrease by years is huge improvement when you look at it in the long run.

Does it mean they can't buy themselves a pack of cigarettes even after they've turned 18 or 21?

Wow, that's a good law. I don't know if they will be able to implement it fully but I really hope they do. The best way to stop smoking is prevention.

No way to enforce this and therefore it's a pretty bogus law. There'll always be under the counter dealers who already sell illegal forms of cigarettes to minors, this will just increase the amount of illegal activity and laundering of money to suspicious gangs. Honestly think this is a bad decision just like the decision to make drugs illegal. When you try to force someone how to live their life, then they'll undoubtedly try even harder to do the thing you don't want them to do. If people want to smoke let them, there's no point in making it illegal and prosecuting more innocent people for the things they put in their own body.

Good law but how is this going to be restricting? People who were born before 2000 would easily buy cigarettes and distribute to those born after 2000. I don't think it would really make a difference but in the long run it might.

Yes, that's what it means. It's a way to eventually stop people from buying cigarettes until all the smokers die.

Here's the article about this topic that I have found:

    http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/jun/23/doctors-vote-cigarette-sale-ban-children-born-2000

There's a lot of issues with this proposed law, at least for me. Here's some that I want to address:
    • How exactly are they going to enforce this law? Should shops ask for IDs each time a person buys cigarettes? How about the illegal market or small shops that sell cigarettes to young people?
    • I'm particularly a pro-choice person, I don't force other people to decisions they don't want to make. The same goes for cigarette smoking, it's their choice. And as long as they don't do it in public or near children or other people, then it's up to them. It's their life and we cannot control it.
    • Prohibitions don't work. In any case, it just allows for black markets to flourish.
    • Why not just raise the legal smoking age? And properly enforce the law. The fact that they need to create a law that bans children from buying cigarettes means that the current law isn't strictly enforced.
    That's about it...

First, yes, the same way you'd ask a person who looks young if he's over 18 or 21 in order to buy cigarettes and/or alcohol. Also this is not meant to make people consider starting to smoke at an older age, this is meant to make them not smoke at all, not now, now in 30 years. Just think about, even if blackmarket will flourish, the general tendency will be a decrease, I know lots of cases of people who seemed to be the geeky type, they started smoking, as it was pretty easy to get cigarettes for them, do you think that those types of people would go and search for a black market dealer of cigarettes just to try them? Also the popularity would decrease, as fewer and fewer people will be smoking.

I like the idea of this policy. In the United States, where I live, you have to be eighteen to smoke. I was actually surprised people in the United Kingdom born after 2000 were able to smoke already. People who start smoking at a young age tend to keep smoking into adulthood. However, I do support free choice, but discouraging smoking (albeit against free choice) I see as necessary. Kids sixteen and under don't have fully developed brains and often lack quality decision making skills. Overall, I support this new policy and believe it as a net positive for society.

Ineffective. Why just don't they enforce a definitive cigarette's ban for everyone and his uncle? The ban could be counterproductive because the younger generations will feel attracted to it because they have seen thousands of time their characters in movies and
series smoking a looking cool with it. Smoking cigarettes is still a great part of social's acceptation.

So, Nope.I can't figure out how this could be effective. But anyway time will tell.

Well, I really don't think it's gonna be of much use. Banning would just make it look cooler. Look at how marijuana usage is increasing.

I think that right now it might be able to put in place since someone that was born in 2000 is 16 years old. The thing is 2 or 3 years from now when they are 18/19 years old. How can you tell the difference between a 18 year old from a 20 year old. It's not easy unless they show you their identity card.

Definitely very restrictive. I think the biggest problem is drawing the line between personal choice and exploitative sales, it's a tricky middle ground. It opens pandora's box socially on what's acceptable.

That is exactly what a person who works at a shop is supposed to do when he sells tobacco or cigarettes to a person who looks very young, I can't see how that can be a problem.
Marijuana usage increasing after what? It hasn't been legal for the last hundred of years if I'm not mistaken, or are you comparing that the consume is increasing from over a hundred years ago when it was legal?

This is true but some places don't bother unless the person is buying the tobacco is clearly very young. Girls can normally get away with murder since they can put on make up and can make themselves look much older then what they really are.
