As far as I see it, it's common sense that e-cigs are way safer than cigarettes. They are healthier and cheaper, but some pieces of news have been appearing saying it's dangerous for the health and even forbidding it. How reliable is this? Is it the tobacco lobby just fighting for it's space?

Nowadays you don't know what to believe or not. The researchers everywhere making contradicting statements. I could as well do my research and publish it. It is like nothing is reliable nowadays.

Well, as a person who writes a lot of essays I'd say the main thing you should pay attention to is the sources. If the writer says his/her opinion on something, then an experience/fact should be provided. If a writer mentions some research done by others - link, legitimate link. It's the Internet, baby. Floods of crap are taking over.

The problem with research on new stuff is that the human body doesn't operate on a 1-week, 1-month of even 1-year scale. On top of that, people are massively affected by their diet, climate, etc. Everytime research is released, something has to be left out of the picture to draw a perfect conclusion

With any type of research you have to look at where it is coming from and how it is being collected. Chances are there are many ways to poke holes in the research, and that is just what all these companies and agencies do, so if you can trust what you see then go with it. Examine it closely though, because sometimes they can use data and twist some words and be clever to make you think it means something that it might not.

My psychology teacher used to say 'There are lies, damn lies, and statistics'. Fairly sure the quote didn't originate from him, but the point he was making is certainly still valid today. Unfortunately, there are those who believe anything with the words 'study' or 'research' behind it, must be true. They will then go on parrot fashion to repeat those statements to others either on social media or other platforms, who will be convinced by the arguments without checking any facts for themselves.

I like the expression you use "parrot fashion" because thse days we have plently of those that have space in the media and say a lie so many times that it becomes the truth. Sad but true these days.

E-cig is not always cheaper at least not in India. Though, it's a known fact that it is far safer than the traditional ones. Sometimes, we have to use our common sense because media is all about politics. E-cigs can have no to very less nicotine in it while nicotine is abundant in the traditional ones.

Yeah, that seems legit. You can regulate yourself how much nicotine you want to be in your vaping device. That's one of the benefits.

Even here in Philippines... Although I could say that e-cig is cheaper in the long run.

As far as I've read, e-cig is safer than traditional cig. Although it is (or may be) true that e-cig is not-so-safe. It still contains nicotine and some other stuffs that traditional cig has, albeit in a smaller amount.

Most e-cigarettes still contain nicotine, and it is bad for you. It's obvious that a doctor couldn't accept people taking in a poison and not go against it, you shouldn't create the illusion that just because it's safer then regular cigarettes that it's 100% safe. It is just the better of two ills.

My guess is that this whole craze is a little to knew for any research done to be that reliable. Give it another decade (I know, it's hard to ask) and perhaps studies like this will lead to some relevant results and reflections of health risks and such.

I have heard a lot about this popcorn lung research on my facebook. I see headings everywhere saying"Ecigs linked to the incurable popcorn lung disease!" and it is frustrating because some people will believe anything they read without doing research.
Someone made an article that spoke about this, the article also states that the chemical that causes this popcorn lung is 110 times lower in ejuice compared to cigarrettes, again reaffirming that vaping is still at least 95-99% safer than smoking. http://blog.mtbakervapor.com/the-truth-about-diacetyl/#sthash.kh5un2wy.dpuf

Since I am an avid supporter and promoter of the concept of independent investigation and education, I looked at the study that Jack is referring to and looked at studies about diacetyl in tobacco cigarettes. You can view and download both studies for free:

Here is the study about diacetyl in e-cig liquids performed by the EHP: http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/15-10185/

Here is the study about diacetyl in tobacco cigarettes performed by researchers at the Dept of Environmental Toxicology: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/...ionid=A856EAAE853683847D37DC0F49231593.f02t01

The findings of the study performed by the Dept of Environmental Toxicology show that tobacco cigarettes have higher amounts of the compound that causes popcorn lung. It also indicates that smokers are exposed to this compound via direct inhalation of smoke, but also through the smoke that is not directly inhaled from the cigarette (second hand smoke).

I've said it before, and I will say it again.... It's funny that researchers try so hard to demonstrate that vaping is more harmful than not vaping at all; which is something that the vaping community does not deny. The vaping community is arguing that vaping is better than smoking; which all research has indicated is true. Much of the research in mainstream media does not compare the two side-by-side; which is why we must do most of the footwork to make the comparison.

The research that I have linked to support what Mt Baker Vapor is saying in the link that Ladyferoz provided.

One of the voices of reason, I wish I could locate those facebook posts about popcorn lung and copy and paste the information there. People are quick to worry without researching. It can be quite difficult to avoid diacetyl, especially if it is in strawberries. Now, who does not like strawberries huh?

What a great post! Yep, this stuff has a lot more credibility than all those media "independent research".

Ah yes, Facebook; the place online where if something is in meme form, it is considered reliable and accurate. I need to re-find the research about the compounds present in second-hand vapor. Diacetyl was not found in second-hand vape, but is found in second-hand smoke.

I've tried the argument of food products with diacetyl. It wasn't effective because someone pointed out that food is not inhaled.
