'K ... to that end, a lovely member of this forum (from Bundy ) is procuring a 22ّ stepped drill for me ... and I picked up some silver solder yesterday

or Pool acid

Use hydrochloric acid, also known as muriatic acid.

Mix 1/3 part hydrochloric acid to 1 part water in a vat used for chemical mixtures.
Hydrochloric acid (HCI) can be purchased already prepared in jars.
Submerse the chromed object in the solution until chrome strips off.
Wash the object thoroughly in soap and water, and rinse before drying.

Well that was no fun at all! I put enough in to bring the water up to around 85°C, gave it one hour and it had the same impact as health warning on a cigarette pack. If I was thinking, I could have made a batch of soap with it - doh!

The HCl could be an option for a copper version (which it won’t touch), but it will strip the zinc from the brass making it copperish - too bad bunnings only sell it in the maxtreme 45L ‘terrorist pack’, someone else can try that out - I’ll stick to mechanical removal till then.

Meh, I lost all hope of learning chem once we started physics and got to do fun stuff like make .comss guns with our pens while the teacher was busy reading the sports - fizzy volcanoes didn’t have the same entertainment value for me.
