While doing some work in the bathroom yesterday, I found a stash of the wife’s hair dye. Now this stuff was well hidden as she is very self conscious about the fact she is ageing and her hair is turning grey. (Just a little) I know for a fact that when I am home she goes to the hairdresser and spends a small fortune, gossiping, drinking coffee, and killing grey hair. When I am at work, this stash indicates she is into DIY, and does it herself.

It so happened I was heading off to Bunnings to grab some wood dye to color a lump of pine I drilled a couple of days ago, to fashion a new mod stand. The Mac’guyver instinct kicked in, and there was my wood dye, under the bathroom sink!!!

Results as shown. Need to be very careful as its very aggressive, and once on, it aint coming off, and that includes the fingers!! Final finish is a couple of coats of Car.comba wax.

Fantastic work Robray, would love to hear more about the process of getting the wood shaped so perfectly, do you do it by hand or using a lathe?

It was part of some work I have been doing outside. Work is finished, but the round thing was purchased from a wood yard. Around six bucks. The guy who helped me bought 4 but we only used two. Still have one left.

    OK,
my missus is a hairdresser and I've seen all those colours in our cabinet.
Which one did you use bud ?
I believe Blue is getting hard for the ladies to get hold of, so maybe not a good idea to tell her what you been using for stain if that's the one ;)

    Twasnt the blue one.

That was an experiment done with tea and iron acetate. It is actually black. The centre one is a Clairol Medium brown, but as I said its very aggressive when applied to wood.

Potassium permangenate is a great cheap wood stain. Condy's crystals. A couple of ounces will make a litre of wood stain. Lovely warm brown it ends up.

Good thinking mrsgruffy!!! I wouldn't have thought brown, but well worth a try. Have so far used tea, but that just darkens the pine. I will source some and give it a go!!

Makes sense as potassium permanganate is an oxidizer and would .comse exothermic reactions. I will be careful I promise.

(need to find out more. Sound like fun) Anarchist Cook book any one!!!

I put the air con on in the car today, and for the first time, the smell of stale cigarette smoke was gone! I love noticing these little positive changes.
I have paper cups in the cup holders which are right in front of the ashtray we never need to open any more :)
