Hybrid wick for line/genesis/squiggle

I find the line is very smooth and even though it outputs more vapour than the boges it doesn't have the TH, so I figure in part it is due to lower overall heater temps.
part of its less gunking up is also the same I assume.
So I figure a cross was in order.

so rolled up some wick in mesh ..


only a rough oxidise. more of a clean, no water or PG dunk at all, is easier to heat with an insulator to hold.

trickiest bit wrapping wire evenly .. NOTE: the wick is folded back along the mesh and the wire wrapped over it. Acts as both a thermal and electrical insulator and allows the heater to get hotter than usual.

after wrapping I then snipped off the excess wick and cut the bottom off the mesh at an angle, do not do what I did, cut the damn heater wire as well, I unwrapped a turn and wound another on top which made it all a little less neat. fitted on provari and it came in at 1.9Ω which is somewhat lower than I thought it would be yet I can't see any shorts.

edit: After a dry burn clean 3 days in, atty measured 2.6Ω, then dropped back to 2.0Ω. Suspect top wire is hitting some mesh still due to its proximity to the edge as I had to wind on another coil. Still works ok though and none of the coil gets red in normal use.

there is definitely a slight increase in TH, it also makes a little noise now when it was dead silent before, not a lot of noise though.
Will let you know how it goes over a few days..

first few hours in report:
has put it more in line (pun intended) for what I like, it no longer needs 3 or 4 drags to warm it up, the outer body of the atty does not get as hot as it did so if nothing else it has markedly improved efficiency.
I think the flavour is improved at this point, I have had a burnt taste when not inverted for a while to allow a top up.

I like it so far.

I am happy with mine with just the mesh. I actually cut my nic in half as it was spinning me out and I couldn't chain vape.

oh yeh, it gets through the nic just fine, i had a nurofen yesterday .. nic headache.
I just find the throat hit is down a bit, its not harsh enough in a way and that seems to make me vape more.

hence the hybridisation, attempt to make a best of both worlds type of thing and see what happens, one thing, this particular atty is now fogging up a storm and gone through a 1ml of juice in a few hours, since I am 2ml a day usually, probably due for another nurofen tonight.

 

My juice consumption has nearly doubled since the Line. But I love the vape so much that I don't mind.

Yap.. I'm up to around 6ml from 2ml on cartos/tanks using my cheapo squiggle exclusively atm.. Love this rebuildable stuff!

Mesh is working well for me, never had to invert but looks like an interesting setup for a tinker.. Where did you end up scoring your silica Stoney?

its some of the silica that was provided with the n-haler atty, got a shit ton of it (as shayne would say )

 

Ahh.. Yeah, I ended up checking out bbqs galore as mentioned by Robray but no go in these parts, all good as mesh is doing it for me now. Gotta love themeshcompany.com ordered my 2 a3 sheets of #400 and got 6!

They still sell it in WA for sure. If you know of any welders or plumbers, They use woven fire blankets made of the same stuff. I have used this stuff and it works well. Try and get a clean bit and just "unweave" it.

 

clean it with a blowtorch if its dirty, i have used fibreglass as well, same thing..
bunnings sells like fibreglass tape for doing repairs, $5 a metre or so.

 

I like just plain mesh as it works for me.

But I in no way doubt the wick bit in the middle.

its not the same type of thing as a normal silica atty wick though like what is in a CE2 for eg. It does act like the hybrid it is. If you like mesh then thats fine as well, like I said, it was just a little too smooth for my liking. That maybe just me but I figured I would start a thread anyway ..
in a normal silica wick there is nothing stopping the silica part from getting very hot and cooking juice mainly when run a little dry, the reason I tried this is that the mesh still removes most of the heat and stabilises the temperature as the juice will conduct the heat into the mesh still, the silica also acts as an electrical insulator so no issue with shorting out at all.
with the much reduced oxidation method its far quicker than making a normal wick anyway, I have not swapped my line off for the liquinator at all since making this one.
I had started doing so earlier in the day, so I figured I would give it a go.
even when it was still fairly dry when just fitted, the heater was not getting red hot at all like a normal type dry burn would produce.

 

Yeah, I should really try again at bbqs galore. Sorta got the feeling when I left that the old dude there thought I was looking for some standard rope and was on lunch so didn't really wanna sit and explain.. Have to get a spool or a blanket for my tinkering/doomsday supplies at some point.

Yes, its sold as sealing gasket for oven doors and fire boxes. I know they still sell it as I was looking around a couple of weeks ago. Its prepacked in two meter lengths and different diameters. Cant remember what they were, but the smallest will do for us survivalists!!!!

 

That is cool, I just find that what I am using just works really well.

Here are my tips on how to get the FRTA/squiggle (or what ever you call it) cranking.

1. THE MESH: Roll the mesh up super tight and oxidise whole thing with a blue flame. Do it three times dunking in water each time. Do the same process with a red flame. Cut on a 45 degree angle on the bottom. Try to shove it in the hole, trim it back a bit if necessary. You want the wick to be on even par with the top post or a tiny bit taller. The wick should be about ¾ down in the tank allowing the syringe to go down through the wick and to touch the bottom.
2. THE COIL: From the very bottom of the small post tie off wire. Rap it around the coil about nine or ten times, keeping the coil fairly close. Fill your tank and prime the crap out of your wick. At this stage I was going to give up as my vv box mod from mad vapes was going stupid be.comse I forgot to prime the wick.
3. BLUE FOAM: Yes after a while the wick got dry the coil would go red and give me the a shitty taste. Remember when it was super trendy to have blue foam in your carts as dripping is so evil > Well I had some in the old odds and ends draw that I had bought from ecigs-sa. The pre cut squares were the perfect size. After some trial and error I worked out something awesome. I hooked each side to each silver wire post making sure it was touching the wick and wire. So now I have blue foam on the wick on one side. The side with the air hole I left alone as it allowed air flow direct to the wick. Prime the wick and the foam. Crank up to 4.5v and it works like a charm. Well give a little time to work the flavour into the wick and foam.

I hope this helps some people out who don't want to get or could not justify buying a line.

 

I gave your hybrid a go Stoney, in my own fashion.


I used a small piece of fibreglass wick with a 2cm wide piece of pre-oxidised mesh. rolled it all up nice and snug (not overly tight), cut both ends and installed as usual. I didn't leave any fibre wick prawled over the mesh. It just had a firbre wick centre.


Anyway, It's definitely a better vapour producer. Nice big clouds. Flavour is still the same. Just thought it would be a nice way to supply more juice to the mesh and it worked.

Not too sure on the fibreglass though. Doesn't seem to wick as well as silica and it comes apart a little too easy. It's definitely an improvement for me over the standard mesh (in the squiggle. waiting on my line), I think silica will really get it going.

 

I tried your method on the aga w Stoney. Works a treat. I cape VG and the mesh I have is only good for pg. I used silica wick in the guts and now it seems to feed a lot better
