Dont throw bits of wood away

Hi People

As reported in an earlier thread, my last shiney stand was banished from the house as it were perceived as “uncouth” I suspect her family wanted it returned to the closet. Not much point having skeletons in the closet, missing a skull. Never mind. Built something more to her liking.

This was off-cut material from my pergola repairs. Never throw nuthin away!! It was actually quite expensive, as I had no drills for the job. Buying tools is never money wasted. The holes were drilled in three stages, as my first test attempt with a 25mm spade drill was a disaster. Throw enough cash at anything, and nothing is difficult. This is a new thing for me. Last time I attempted anything like this was at school. Got a D- for which I got a belt behind the ear from the old man. Those were the days when you had to buy your own material.

Not finished yet. Needs oiling and polishing and nailing together. I am sure there are tradesmen out there who can point me in the right direction and have built there own stuff. Be happy to see them and steal some ideas!!!

The only reason I post this crap is to put ideas out there, very limited ideas, but ideas. Maybe when I retire doing and selling this stuff will keep me sane, but at this point, I don't think so. Sorry

 

Nice work Rob ... a wee bit O tea stain and some clear eurathane over it will make it shine ... oiling is cool , but wont necessarily juice proof it ( and ya gotta keep oiling , unless you beeswax it and polish the hell out of it )

 

I have a stash of Linseed oil that is well mature and quite dark. Somewhere in the archives I have a recipe for an oil base wax and lavender polish that is quite durable. Not over bothered about juice stains. I will just oil and polish it up then glue it together.

 

I shellacked my 'orrible green pine table after as.comlting it with a heat gun and a belt sander, I am a big fan of the shellac.
apparentely according to wiki it went out in 1928, stuff that, if it was crap they would not sell it in the hardware.
besides .. i bet a 1928 table lasts a lot longer than the 2011 crap they call wood nowadays.

A finish I really like working with is TruOil (gun stock oil)
finished the Telecaster in my Avatar with it, came up nice, is real easy to use and a little goes a very long way
one of these did about 10 coats on my guitar with some left over Tru-oil Gun Stock Finish - 3oz - Wax - Polish - Bluing - Cleaning - Gun Care - by Birchwood Casey
Any gun shop will carry it if you dont want to buy online
these guys probably stock it
