fixed many a factory full of these things, but never actually owned one and had a play with it.
its all boxed now with a 40A SSR and since its a relay output (ebay seller did not say output type) i had to add a little power supply for the sense input of the SSR.
Stuck a thermocouple to one of my pcbs with kapton tape, shove it in the oven, plug oven in the front and set the PV to 220, turn.comtotune on so it learns what the oven does, hey presto one kitchen temp controlled bulk soldering station.
    its awesome..

still to add a few grommets and cable ties ..

yeh i figure it will be a very versatile unit, i cant think of anything else yet though, i am sure i will.

    total cost ..
    PID controller $13 (bought 2)
    thermocouples $1.80 ( bought 4)
    SSR $4.50 (bought 2)
power supply .. bandsawed of the end of an old project.
    power socket $2.90
    cable gland $1.20
box .. was in the shed $6 i think

I reckon if i was to go shopping for one in an industrial electrical store, i woudn't be getting change from $30

Apparently if you are anal about your fridge they do a bang up job there too LOL
I am tossing up with mine , I just blew a defrost heating coil ... will I go full hog and fit the new coil and ditch the whole thermostat arrangement to have a PID controlled freezer ?( ponders)

Yeah mine was about the same price shipped too ... there are spareparts blokes making a killing on resale for sure
