    Harbor Freights butane micro torch.

Does it use a replaceable flint?

Mine will no longer light by pressing the sparker button.

I know they are only 6 bucks or so but if i can fix it....

LOL I read the reviews before I got one but I got it anyway. I got it because it was $7. They didnt have fuel for it so I went next door to home depot to pick up some. Thats when I saw a benzomatic. It was $30 but I was like hey it will cost me $30 if I have to come back to the city anyway. Smart move on my part because the HF torch only lasted 1 fire. When I tried to fire it back up for a second time, it wouldnt do anything and wont take any fuel either.
If you figure it out let us know.

    I have been using the same cheapo torch for over a week now with no problems at all! {keeping fingers crossed}
One thing I noticed is that it's easy to over-fill, in which case you will get flickering, flaming, and other weird things. I had to light mine with a lighter once or twice in the beginning, but it's been lighting right up ever since.

Don't think so - I think it's Piezo electric ignition.

Wouldn't a cigarette lighter and a pair of pliers to hold the SS mesh accomplish what a $7 HF micro torch would?

I have my first Genesis style RBA coming in later this week and for ONE piece of SS mesh I'm NOT buying a torch. Not when I have a lot of silica and cotton wick in my house already. I may not like the SS.

A lighter flame probably won't get it hot enough. A gas burner can be used though, anything that provides an intense flame will work. The torch is just much quicker.....

Think I'll try a 6 mm boiled cotton wick in that AGA T2 first. If I'm not satisfied I'll buy a decent torch at Home Depot or Lowe's.

Just the thought of mesh with burnt carbon sitting in my juice puts me off a bit.

Actually the reason for getting it so hot is that you don't want carbon to build up, you want the Chromium in the SS to oxidize and build up a layer of Chromium oxide which is for most intents non-conductive. Same reason you need to get the coil glowing evenly is to create a similar layer on the coil.
I've used a Bernzomatic micro torch from Lowe's for all my wick-making and it's a solid little machine.

My only experience with RBA's is my Phoenix so far, and I rebuild my Vivi Nova heads. Have a baggie of T3 heads to rebuild soon too, I'm a lazy bugger.

    Thks for the heads up.

Funny thing I have been using Genisis since they first came out and always use a Bic to oxidize my wicks. I have a torch but have never had the urge to use it.

Instead I have found a new use for an old friend. I do still like to flic my Bic.

They sell refillable butane mini torch lighters at gas stations for like $2.99. I have like 3 of them from my "smoking in storms at work" days. They all still work fine, too.

This one looks pretty cool. You could be like MacGyver.

My gas stove works just fine for SS wicks.
