Variable Power Mod

+1000 - just think it gives the mod the visual cred it deserves mate. Now its time to start fooling with funky finishing options

 

That's the button I've got on mine (first semi rounded proto). Feels and works great. Pushes easy with either hand and any part of finger or thumb easily, enough resistance not to accidentally fire in your pocket and feels really sturdy

 

Johnny, just had a thought on the battery remaining indication.

Currently it flashes 6-8 times a colour or combination of colours that represent a voltage level in the cells, from which you can infer how much battery life you have remaining. Its not difficult but getting 2 days from the midi becomes a lottery be.comse its not fine enough to give me confidence to not charge it every night. Why not just split your voltage chart into 5, at full charge flash Red 5 times, at 80% charge 4 Red 1 Blue, etc down to 20% 1 Red 4 Blue. Given the discharge rate is reasonably flat wouldnt this be an easier way to read how much charge is remaining? And if its not flat adjust the values such that it reflects that.

Thanks for the suggestion Gaz. I was thinking of doing something similar to display attie resistance, viz: short press to setup, 5 short press to display resistance, red flashes for units, green flashes for decimal. Eg. 2.5 ohm would flash red, red, grn, grn, grn, grn, grn.

 

yes please, was thinking of asking for this, but thought it was too much, 6 for precise wattage readout in the same fashion would be cool as well, red for 5 watts, green for 1 watt, yellow for .1 watts, 11.3 R R G Y Y Y

its not a terrible idea but most people are morons and won't understand why it keeps flashing different colours at them.

Guess I have a weird sense of fun but I couldn't resist doing something with a couple of 900mAh IMR14650's I had got some samples of. So mounted an attie connector on a stainless steel bracket, a bit of soldering and some 24mm heatshink and voila.....the HSVP (heatshrinked) VP mod

went the LED flashy route meself, takes quite a few seconds to get all the data out tho. you don't have to use it of course.

 

I've yet to implement it. Plenty of code space left (using 67% of 4KB atm) but I think that apart from perhaps attie resistance, displaying a more precise value for battery voltage or power setting than can be got from the LED colour is something that not many would bother using.

 

heh, was supposed to make me v2 board this weekend but a night in the hospital on about 3 different anti biotics spoilt that. cheek infection from straight razor..
i just use a red led for power, a green for battery and blue for atty R. doesn't capture well on camera due to PWM dimming though, will increase led resistors next version so I can use a bit longer on time.
flash .comse flash for each reading. works ok but a bit tedious.

funnily enough I had an IRC convo with mildew close to a year ago where I said if I made a mod I would use the colours to signify voltages etc. you did that (some dammits where heard) so I went to flashing

ours are different enough we could standardise .. lol

I'm on about 30% code with a bunch of crud in there as well.

 

Truth be know it's always difficult to come up with something new. I'm sure I wasn't the first to come up with the variable power concept but within a couple of months of starting to vape back in April, VP seemed the logical way to go when I first considered making a mod. There's been numerous occasions, in dare I say it my 35 years of product design and development, that I've had what I thought was an original idea only to discover that someone else had already been there.

 

yup, I did go for variable voltage to start with actually but due to the methodology in my ecig, it makes no sense ,, I can;t think of a logical way to do it.

I still have a feeling we have similar electronics I have been avoiding reading your threads .comse I hate to copy anything, I want to design something how I want it not see what else is good and copy it. I have had to skim for mod reasons and sik posted some info on IRC that i read.

I know in my own mind, I have not copied anything .. you did give me a 'just make the damn thing moment though' along with Mildews nagging. Procrastinated for a year, was gold prospecting with kooks when I had a eureka moment though, I was going to do a boost mod, got some damn chunky nice inductors in my parts bin.

 

First batch of rounded cases arrived this morning. From left to right they are in Silk Oak, Beech, Blackwood, Pencil Cedar and Beech. Other hardwoods will be available shortly....

This year when I was chopping firewood, I wondered how a redgum mod would look, even saved a few nice chunks to do .. something with.
Considering using a chunk for a floor lamp base with a big bamboo stem and an assortment of RGB LEDs in the sides and top that can be played with.
I like wood.

 

After a rub with tung oil using fine steel wool.......
