I am looking at various options to create makeshift hacks/mods and one I idea I had was to use a AC/DC adapter/transformer.... Something like this:

    Specs:
    Input: 100-240V~1.0A MAX 30-40VA, 50-60HZ
    Output: +5V DC 3.0A 15W MAX
    LEVEL 3 SUPPLY
    Model: SYS1298-1505-W2
    Part No. SYS1298-1505-A-10
    Center: Positive

So basically you have a wall-plug (240V) that outputs +5V DC at 3.0A with 15W power. Just cut off the plug that would normally plug into something to charge/power it, and get something similar to a USB passthrough casing and attach the positive and negative wires to the atty connector..

Seems to make sense to me.....?

Yes that willl work. You will get 9.6 Watts with a 2.6 ohm attie and 7.1 Watts with 3.5 ohm.

Good point Sik....you may get a bit of a tingle as these power supplies are generally not earthed and some capacitive current will flow from the AC mains to the secondary side...usually not deadly though

Yer.. it's got all the over drain protection and all that mumbo jumbo in built to these chargers these days.. so I just won't use a metal driptip and I should be ok :p

Yerp.. that's basically the idea I was having.. except instead of a big workshop-style ac/dc variable transformer (like one my dad has), I was thinking of the wall socket charger type thing to make it at least a little less cumbersome.

This is my first post here, so 'Hello' from Wales.

I'd been thinking about using one of these transformers as a PT power supply too, so was a bit concerned to read this. Can you explain if there's a difference between this sort of transformer and the 2a mains USB chargers that are generally recommended for PTs that would .comse a possible tingle, as these aren't earthed either (afaik).
    Thanks

If there is no earth pin on the mains plug then it will probably have this issue. Personally if I was going to use one of these I would make sure the low voltage secondary side is properly earthed. I've opened quite a few of these cheap chinese power supplies and I've yet to see a properly certified class Y capacitor where it's used to shunt high frequency noise from primary to secondary. Normally the small current that flows is not an issue except for a tingle when you first come in contact with it but if a high voltage transient occurs on the mains and you happen to be the path to earth you will literally be in for quite a 'shock'.
