Thought I would mention Aldi have a $40 food dehydater this week. Some use them for steeping. Hope this is not against the rules, mentioning the shop name.

With postage it would probably not be that cheap I suppose.
If you are heading this way any time soon, I could grab one for you and tuck it away for you to collect.

Mine turn their noses up at the dried stuff. Probably spoilt with fresh though, they always get bits of whatever dinner is. Although the downside being they think anything being cut where they can see is for them.

See how I completely rose above making any comment about jerky. :medal:

I hear ya Nakors ... mine is currently turning up her nose at fresh strawberries in favour of frozen corn ... no accounting for taste !
Be just my luck I spend up on a dehydrator and she turns her nose up , but being young hopefully is still in that exploring stage so its probably better to try her now than once shes locked in to certain favourites .
Just want to get stuff when fresh here and maximise the use out of it ... our local little IGA isnt known for great quality fruit n veg and a lot of what I buy ends up chook food cos its crap before you get to eat it ... unless you drive into town every day and buy what ya need for that night .

Got the Aldi one on Wednesday and made a batch of jerky yesterday, there's only a couple of bits left. It is very moreish, looks like I will be making more tomorrow. For $40 I rekon you can't go wrong.

Hey mate, I don't really have a specific recipe just what I got in the cupboard at the time. Usually a bit of soy .comce, Worchester .comce, liquid smoke, tobasco .comce, barbecue .comce, garlic powder, onion powder, chilli flakes, black pepper, salt, bit of water and whatever else takes my fancy at the time. Leave in the fridge for 24 hours.

Last week I purchased a Hi Mountain jerky cure and seasoning variety pack that has 5 different flavours in it which has worked well. So far we have tried sweet and spicy, Mandarin teriyaki and Inferno that have all been good ( 2kg batch has only lasted 1 to 1 1/2 days before it has all been consumed ) I thought the Inferno (Hot) would have slowed the kids down, but no they still ate it. Still have the pepper and a pepperoni one to try, but will buy more of these Hi Mountain kits for sure.

I grabbed this one for that reason. Where did you get your seasoning?

Scored this one from ebay for $58 delivered :)

6 Trays Rectangular Food Dehydrator Preserve Jerky Fruit Dryer Maker LCD Black | eBay

Havent fired it up yet , but its certainly large enough :D
double the power of the smaller circular ones , not sure if thats a good or bad thing yet ... should mean it has a short "on" cycle to maintain temps... I like the idea of digital control and timer too ( not that timer is truly necessary , but I am a bugger for leaving things on and forgetting LOL )

That looks like a good buy Fatman. The one's from Aldi are only 250 watt but they do the job. I finish my jerky off in the oven for 10 minutes at 75 celsius to be safe. Something I read online about it has to reach at least 73 Celsius internal temperature to kill the bacteria. I need to buy an oven temperature .comge to test what temp the dehydrator is getting to. I have done five 2kg batches in it so far and haven't poisoned anyone, touch wood.

I have a hand held IR temp meter I use for all things , from setting the fridge to calibrating my ancient gas oven or even the chiminea out the back for doing pizza ....
Best thing I ever bought lol . I originally got it for measuring the cylinder temps of model planes and cars when tuning :)

Can even tell you when you are crook :D
