I was not aware that Australia was so against the whole e-cigarette thing. Like some of the other users have suggested it just kind of seems like there is a little more behind the scenes here that is going on. I am sure that if you follow the money there is probably someone benefiting who is not supposed to be or something along those lines. Or maybe I am just being cynical again, it is my usual frame of reference these days.

Wow, is Australia really depending on that smoking industry?

I also wasn't aware about the Australia's policy when it comes to smoking industry, but however when it comes to losing lots of money from taxes I guess that every country would be against something. They will probably change their policy once they'll develop a big e-cigs industry and then put taxes on those, at least that would seem like the logical move here as the growing popularity of vaping devices can't be stopped by any policy.

Australia doesn't care for vaping for a variety of reasons, but I still think it's a huge mistake to force against it. As of now, you kind of just have to wait for everything to blow over...I have heard numerous times that Australia and anything to do with nicotine is just a kangaroo court of decisions

It doesn't make sense that they would go all out against vaping. Can Australians still order their vaping gear from abroad without it being confiscated at the post office?

In this day and age though, it's very hard not to be cynical as it seems that behind every decision, you'll find an MP or businessman that's making some money on the side and not putting lives of people first.

For Australia to be so set dead against it while other countries have accepted vaping, makes me more than a little suspicious also.

Well, nicotine is classified in Australia as a Schedule 7 poison. It is illegal to sell, import or supply nicotine in Australia. In all fairness, smoking cigarettes is also widely prohibited in public places in Australia. So vaping with nicotine or importing nicotine in the country can be quite a hassle.

Some states are very strict with this law, like Queensland. In any case, bringing your own device and liquid is fine as long as it's for personal use. Some states also allow personal importing of nicotine, just don't sell it or bring more than what you can consume.

That's not to say that cigarettes aren't available in the country, they're just restricted. Their use is very restricted as well. In a way, it's fine with me as long as they don't confiscate my devices and I don't advertise my vaping to anyone else.

I can see more and more countries going down that same route in the future aswell, but it comes down to the argument of restricting people's freedom of choice.

If a person wants to smoke or vape and it doesn't cause anybody else any harm, is that not there right to do so in a free country?

There will always be those who try to limit the freedom of others just because they don't agree with their opinions. It stinks, and they really should reevaluate their policies, but I am just glad that I don't live in Australia!

The US is borderline against it most of the time. They associate it with big tobacco around here, but the small mom and pop shops I frequent are so far away from big tobacco it isn't even funny. Also, big tobacco is making a huge push in the media against ecigs around here. It's disturbing that governments wouldn't encourage something that could help hundreds of thousands if not millions of people.

Most countries have waged a war on cigarettes but Australia seems to be waging a war on nicotine. They seem to be trying to get rid of all nicotine products.

    @pwarbi

That's a great point actually. I also think that personal choice and freedom shouldn't be restricted as long as it doesn't interfere with other people's rights. So in a way, restricting cigarette use in public is fine because we all know that secondhand smoke kills. Restricting buying of cigarettes or even vapes is a bit controversial though. I think that as long as we're not exposing other people to our vapour, it should be fine. Although we do know that vapour isn't really that dangerous as compared to cigarette smoke.

It's an issue that will always have its nay- and yay-sayers. Because the reality is, people don't like what they don't know about. If it's just nicotine, I'm fine with the government being strict with it. But if it's vaping in general, then that's a whole other issue.

Legal to buy, but illegal to use will be an issue that's debated for the forseeable future I feel. The government can't stop a person from buying something that can't be made illegal, but they can restrict that person's freedom and make it illegal to use on the grounds that it affects others.

A lot of the responsibility comes down to the person vaping or smoking though, and if they'd consider other people and only vape or smoke away from others, then the laws would probably be relaxed. The only reason they have to be so draconian is because people who vape and smoke are doing it anywhere and everywhere and not giving a second thought to others. The only way to try and stop that is by producing a law and a punishment for anyone that breaks it.

I personally think it is because Australia may not be as open minded as the other countries that actually support it, it's just the social context we live in that's all. If it was something that actually supported their own country whether it was bad or good for your health they would support it nonetheless.

That's always one reason, but if that is the case, is that down to people deciding and making there own mind up not to support it, or is it because they've been influenced by the government?

I'm all for freedom and the right to choose, but if an outside influence is making you choose and leading you down one route, then that isn't freedom of choice. If people want to vape but get told they're not allowed, then that's certainly not freedom of choice either.

Because they are really behind in technology.. It's such a shame. I'm pretty sure the government and the people will like it much better a couple years from now.

To be honest while I'm obviously no expert, I wouldn't have thought that was the main reason. Australia are a pretty wealthy and modern country, so I just think that even though they have the technology and they know all about vaping, people just aren't willing to embrace it.

I'm not very clear about this matter. Is mainly for nicotine's restrictions or Tobacco industry's lobby? Which one?
