How to get mom to consider vaping?

So my mother has enlisted me to help her think of ways to quit her smoking habit. She's never been a super heavy smoker—I'm guessing that she smokes maybe half a pack a day or a little more. Cold turkey isn't and option, and she has this bizarre prejudice against nicotine patches and gum. She's warmer to vaping, but doesn't want to try it because of "chemicals." I don't vape myself (I don't smoke, but I think that people's bias against vaping is pretty ridiculous) but I don't understand why she's dismissing all these options. She begs me to help her but it seems like she doesn't want to quit at all.

Any way to try to reason some sense into her?

 

Just show her the list of never ending names of people who took this step before they quit. There are lots of successful stories on the internet with people who stopped smoking by switching to vaping first.

 

Give her a little overview of vaping and how it can still deliver the nicotine that the body wants while emitting a lot less harmful chemicals in her body.

 

You should tell the health benefits of vaping over cigarettes to your mom. It is already experimentally proved that vaping is much safer than smoking. This would increase your mom's awareness about vaping and smoking. You can also show many success stories that are available on the Internet. These facts will encourage your mom to quit smoking.

 

There are far more chemicals in cigarettes than what there is in vaping liquids though, and they're a lot more dangerous aswell, so for me that's more of an excuse not to quit smoking rather than a reason not to start vaping.

 

The health benefits got me hooked. The feeling isn't the same as cigarettes, but once you get started, you realize it's a much cleaner experience. No more cigarette smell and no more inhaling a million chemicals. You can vape inside without stinking up the house is also a big plus. I would just explain to her all the benefits and see how that goes.

 

Flavors, flavors flavors. Show her the flavor variety. Let her know she can keep experimenting and it will be insanely less expensive, and she can even still smoke slowly while she vapes. Once she has experienced the difference between the two, she wont reach for the cigs as much, then her natural instinct to avoid them will kick in most likely.

 

I think the flavours like you say are the main thing to focus on if you're trying to convince somebody to try vaping.

Maybe if even the health issue isn't a factor, if they find a flavour they like, it might entice them into giving it a go and I think that's a good start at least.

 

Show her the benefits of vaping. She may just be sceptical because she doesn't know exactly how successful it is.

 

Usually people fear change, also they do not care at all if what you're offering them, it's just a little different from what they have, because there's no way in hell they would trade such an "amazing" experience like smoking, for another one. You'd have to bring a lot more arguments than health benefits, and not ever tell them that it feels a little different, because that's where you lose them, where you make them not even considerate switching anymore.

 

Buy her a simple e-cig, and show her how it works. It might make her feel obligated to try it out since you spent money on it for her (kind of bad, but anything to get her in better health).

If she's not good with technology make sure she knows how to use it, and that you get the least complicated model.

 

Buying her a single e-cig to start off with is a good idea, as they're relatively inexpensive and she'll be able to see then how it works and the theory behind it.

A lot of people fear change, but it's often a good thing and worrying about changing is more often worse than the actual change itself.

 

The first time she saw me vaping was 5 months ago, I was chilling in my room and she suddenly went in and saw me vaping, she got really upset because she thought I was doing something bad (it might be for some people specially parents) but I basically had to wait until she got calmed and then we spoke about it, was something really weird.

 

I'd imagine that if they don't know much about vaping and don't vape themselves, then it's easy to see why they'd think you was doing something illegal when that's not the case at all.

Speaking about it in general is always the best was to educate people, and then at least that way people wouldn't jump to the conclusions that they do at the moment.

 

I think if she could try it, that might make here change her mind. The chemical issue was one that was very often used in the past, even I used that excuse, but vaping has far less chemicals then smoking does.

 

When it comes to switching from smoking to vaping, I think there's quite a few people that are unwilling to give it a go simply because it's something different. They'll come up with excuses like the chemicals one without knowing the facts.

 

This is true, even I didn't just jump onto the bandwagon I did come up with some excuses of my own. I think it's just that initial fear that we might have of the unknown.

I think if she is able to read these studies and articles, she will see for herself how just better of an alternative vaping is. If she's worried about the chemicals, she can try pure VG juices or mixing her own as well. This way, she's sure of the ingredients that go into the juice. She can also research the ingredients in a particular juice and make sure they are safe before buying them.

Just be honest with her, while talking about it. Say it's something you enjoy a lot and you'll probably end up using it later in life, so why not now. Telling her that vaping is way less harmful than nicotine might also help you a lot!
