The 'hate' from social media

Anyone notice the aggressive internet images and posts out there about vaping? Part of me says 'it's just the internet, don't worry about it', but I'm seeing a lot of it on Facebook within circles of friends.

I'm wondering if this is from the growth e-cigarettes have taken on, or if it's just an easy target- because it looks like a hipster thing to the outside world. Anyone else seeing this on social media?

The ironic thing to me is while vaping is arguably safer, and less offensive to the public- cigarette smokers are subjected to less verbal abuse for lighting up.

 

I wouldn't give too much thought to it. There is going to be pullback and mockery from all sorts of people from all angles when it comes to trends or perceived trends, and to be honest it doesn't really matter. All I care about it helping me quit smoking and live a little more healthy lifestyle. I would stick to your original "it's just the internet don't worry" thought that you had.

 

There's always going to be hate on everything you do. Don't pay too much attention to it and don't let it get to you. I'm sure we're all old enough to make our own decisions and know what's best for us.

 

I appreciate that. I'm self-conscious, and I know the hate is never directed solely at me... but still makes me feel odd occasionally haha. Just was curious if it originated from a certain celebrity being associated with vaping, or is just meaningless negativity,

 

People criticize everything. Pick something, someone is criticizing it. Saving little kids with cancer? Someone's gonna call you a pussy. Firefighter? Someone's gonna call you a show-off or a wannabe. Doctor? Part of the medical-industrial complex. Etc. Anything can be criticized, it's just a matter of how socially acceptable it is to criticize it.

 

My response to this is HATERS ARE GONNA HATE. Are you one of those people who are going to be swayed by the written antics of internet trolls or are you going to be your own person about this? The internet is a fine thing but you can't let the opinions of others spewing nonsense about something they likely know less about that you do sway a more informed opinion....aka your opinion.

 

I see what you are saying. There's a lot of backlash against vaping from people who really don't understand it. Some people seem to want to be offended by the mere fact that vapor LOOKS like smoke. It doesn't make any sense but then again logic and reason just isn't some people's strong suits. Anyway, you know there's a million fools on social media, best to just keep scrolling.

 

I think the abuse that vaping gets right now, stems from the fact that it is still a pretty new technology. People are suspicions of it and try to convince others of their suspicion. All of this will disappear in a couple of years for sure.

 

Well, I recently cut myself off the whole social media thing. People nowadays are too much deep into that shit. It's usually been pretty hateful towards anything. Music, fashion, movies... whatever. Everything is getting slammed in the comment section by smartasses.

 

As a long term smoker myself that as recently turned to vaping, I wouldn't say I'm getting any more abuse now for vaping than what I was as a smoker because there was times I was treated as a social outcast simply because I said I smoked.

I do think that vaping could be going the same way as that, but as far as I see it, for no reason. It's still fairly new, and I'm hoping that once its been around for a bit longer, people will start to turn their attentions to something else.

 

That's kind of weird. I thought a bigger percentage of people are actually smokers than non-smokers.

 

For too long, people have judged others based off of what they look like or speak like or do. It's time we start allowing people to enjoy life the way they see fit. I am not saying people should be allowed to do ANYTHING, because illegal things are illegal for a reason. But as far as vaping or marijuana use, people should be given a choice to partake in that behavior without being criticized by everyone.

 

I too have seen these images floating around. I think they're silly, and I have to admit, I used to think vaping was a "hipster trend" until I started seeing people of know who were long time smokers making the switch and seeing their physical changes. I just have a sense of humor about it now. People sometimes share things on Facebook because they know someone that they're friends with will find it funny. Try not to let it bother ya. ☺

 

The strong anti tobacco campaigns have had their toll. Now days anything that reminds people of smoke automatically gets negative feed back. I personally don't get too bothered by it, I know that I am not doing as much harm to my body and to others as I did in the past.

 

There is a pretty bag stigma forming among vape users tbh, people kinda see it as a mouth fedora. Vape users don't even flaunt it too bad nor are they rude about it so I don't get it. Don't let it bother you man.

 

lol mouth fedora, that's the best description I've ever heard. The funny thing is that most people I know that vape have crazy understandings of what they're doing, preferences, suggestions, spare parts...it's such a cool subcommunity and people just treat anyone with a vape like dirt sometimes. It's sad.

 

You can't trust media these days. For the sake of any news headline they are ready to go far and beyond the depths to find a eye catching attention seeking headline. Since Vaping is starting to get popular, these is the perfect time for media to backlash. It happens with most new industries, some go down, some go up the ranks and then the media never bother them. Now is the crucial time for the vaping industry to make jumps and leaps

 

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. That's quite a usual pattern for anything that's new. As long as you stay true to your values that are backed with factual reasons, no one can make you feel little about yourself. The few friends that had made fun of me in the past are now vapers themselves. Some people simply take longer than others to understand, lol.

 

I've noticed and I believe this goes a step further. It's not just about hating, it's something that has economical interests behind. It's a good thing for smokers because now they have a good alternative and the competition is noticing that.
